On the wheel of the 1978 Amateur World Championship photos in our Werner Möller cycling photo gallery series, we bring you the 1978 UCI Professional Road World Championships. Taking place in August 1978 in Nürburging, West Germany, this incredibly tight race ended on the finish line between Gerrie Knetemann and Francesco Moser, and was so close that it required a photo finish to determine the winner.
The cyclist from Ireland with #64 later headed up UCI: former UCI President Pat Mc Quaid. Also of note: see if you can pick out Paul Sherwen in this photo series, who later became a cycling sports commentator for NBC.
Take a look at the names included in this start list roster, an incredible part of cycling history!
